In Fukui Prefecture, which is just north of Shiga, there is a small town on the Sea of Japan coast that happens to be called Obama (小浜), which means "little beach." As you may imagine, they were somewhat interested in the 2008 presidential election in the US. This sign is at Tsuruga Station, the northernmost point on the Biwako/Hokuriku Line that goes through my Japanese hometown, and where you can transfer to the Obama Line. |
